Comment on Street Portraiture 101: Build Your Own Community by Sara Ell https://fujilove.com/street-portraiture-101-build-your-own-community/#comment-3506 Sun, 07 May 2017 17:42:00 +0000 http://fujilove.com/?p=10462#comment-3506 These tips are spot-on! Especially the ones about getting involved in the community and seeing the relationships, not the photographs, as your primary investment. I’ve found that walking up to someone and asking to take their photo makes a lot of people feel self-conscious or nervous, and that of course means that your portraits don’t have that sense of intimacy anymore.

Any tips for those of us that aren’t very, well, extroverted? I sometimes struggle to get up the gumption to approach someone. It’s definitely helped me to stick to populated areas and frequent the same streets, as people are less likely to look askance at you in those situations.

When you shoot at a local store, do they ever ask you to use the shots for promotions? Do you ask them to credit you? Last year I took some photos at a local ice cream shop and they used them on their Facebook page without any attribution. It’s good to have an understanding about promotional things even if there’s a good relationship already there; that’s my advice!

Comment on Review: Samyang 35mm f/1.2 ED AS UMC CS For FX Mount by Sara Ell https://fujilove.com/review-samyang-35mm-f1-2-ed-as-umc-cs-for-fx-mount/#comment-3505 Sun, 07 May 2017 17:31:00 +0000 http://fujilove.com/?p=10493#comment-3505 In reply to Martin Wolfert.

Thanks for the response, Martin! I can see what you mean about the autofocus. I shoot manual very frequently, but I also photograph children a lot and sometimes that autofocus can be invaluable! Really depends on the situation—but that’s why having a diverse kit is so important. I’ll definitely keep this lens on my to-try list.

It was nice to see your write up regarding the X-T1 out in the places that you have used it, I often wondered how it would cope, thanks for the write up and respect for what and where you go, stay safe.
